How to use dog slats to make your own dog beds
By John C. SullivanWASHINGTON — It takes two dogs, a few hours of time, a small dog, a box of dog blankets, and a few dozen of these dog slates to create the ultimate dog bed.
For more than a decade, dog beds have been a staple of the outdoor dining and sleeping space, and they’re still popular.
In fact, some dog owners have a hard time getting rid of their dogs after the first few weeks of their lives, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association.
The American Kennel Club (AKC) says more than 50 million dogs are used for their outdoor shelter use annually.
The number of dogs used for shelter and the number of people who visit shelters has declined substantially in recent decades, but the shelter industry is still the largest provider of shelter beds, the association says.
To get the most out of the shelter bed, owners should:1.
Get a dog that has the ability to walk, jump and run.
The more active, athletic and socialized your dog, the better, the AKC says.2.
Be prepared for the day the dog will go into the shelter.
You need to know how to treat your dog before you start the day.
The first few days are tough.
It can be overwhelming.3.
Make sure your dog’s collar is in good condition and that it fits properly.

Choose the right type of dog bed for your dog.
You may be surprised by the choices.
Some breeds are best suited to different types of dog beds, and some dog breeds prefer one type of bed for comfort while others prefer the opposite.5.
If you’re using a dog bed made with foam, you may want to wash your dog and clean it before using it.
The foam can cause serious illness and injury, and it may even lead to a skin infection.6.
If your dog has a history of fleas or ticks, don’t use dog beds made with these materials.7.
If using a crate, be sure that the bed is well-ventilated, especially if it’s used with a dog who has a very active lifestyle.
It’s best to use a crate made of wood or plastic instead of foam, which can cause your dog to become stressed and irritable.8.
Dog beds made from fabric or vinyl can be harder to clean and can leak or break easily, so be sure your crate is properly sealed.9.
To make sure your bed is comfortable for your dogs, make sure that it is made with the proper materials and that the material doesn’t contain fibers or other chemicals.
For tips on using a shelter bed:• Make sure you are using a suitable, comfortable bed for both your dog or cat.• Use the right size for your animal.
The smaller the bed, the more room your dog will have for movement.• If you have an outdoor dog, be prepared to remove your dog from the bed at night, and to remove the dog from your property if you have to leave the home or take care of your pet.• Make certain your dog sleeps on his side, preferably in a good area with plenty of shade and a good temperature.• When removing your dog at night or taking care of the pet, remember to wear a mask.
